Prospective evaluation of optical coherence tomography for disease detection in the Casey mobile eye clinic

Abstract
This study evaluated iVue Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) effectiveness in screening for eye disease compared to clinical examination among 114 subjects from a mobile clinic serving underserved populations in Oregon. OCT detected diabetic eye disease in 22% of diabetic eyes versus 26% on fundus exam. For glaucoma screening, OCT identified suspects in 18% of eyes compared to 8% by cup-to-disc ratio assessment. OCT found occludable angles in 8% of cases versus 5% by slit lamp/gonioscopy. Optical coherence tomography detected additional retinal abnormalities, glaucoma suspects, and narrow angles compared to clinical exam alone and may serve as a useful adjunct in disease screening for medically underserved populations.
